Devs can now develop Pebble apps that interact with smartphones

Pebble has announced that it has received $15m in Series A funding from Charles River Ventures. The company says the funding will be used to grow the software engineering team. In a press release Pebble also announced its next step of the platform which enables two-way communication between a Pebble smartwatch and a smartphone. Called PebbleKit, the update allows third parties to develop apps that send and receive information from a connected iOS or Android smartphone. Watchapps can be made to do things such as remote controls for internet-connected devices, receieve weather or traffic information or display bitcoin prices.

The Pebble Sports API is also launching today which allows GPS fitness-tracking apps the same functionally with Pebble as Runkeeper. FreeCaddle, a GPS golf rangefinder has released a Pebble-enabled app.
