Thor was released in 2011 and met with great success. The fourth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the characters went on to appear in the blockbuster title Avengers Assemble. Following the success of the first movie and the continuing plans to bring more of the Marvel characters off the pages of the comics and on to the silver screen, Thor: The Dark World will be released on November 8, 2013 in the United States.
The new film will see Thor, once again played by handsome actor Chris Hemsworth, facing a new enemy in the form of former Doctor from the BBC's Doctor Who, Christopher Eccleston’s Malekith, and his ravaging hordes of bloodthirsty Dark Elves.
The recent trailer and TV spot have seen a return of Loki, who is played by Tom Hiddleston. Loki was the main antagonist in Avengers Assemble, and is played pitch perfect by Hiddleston.

Empire magazine have recently released a series of stills so you can get a good look at the enemy Malekith and his army of elves set on destroying Thor. There have been more rumours put about by the stunt men brought in to do the special effects in the films. In fact, it was stuntman James Grogan who let slip about the Dark Elves in the first place and he has gone on to confirm that the film will be set quite extensively in Asgard.
The recently released plot synopsis has even more to reveal. Thor is reunited with Jane, who is possessed by a dark spirit, somehow connected with the Elvish race who no one in Asgard speaks about after a major falling out. The Dark Elves then attack Asgard, and it is up to Thor to go and take the battle back to the Dark Elves. However, this means a reunion with his traitorous step brother Loki, who is locked up in prison.
There is a truce between the two brothers, and they and Jane go to the far side of Asgard to assemble an army fit to take down the Dark Elves.
