Samsung's next Galaxy Gear smartwatch will run on the Tizen operating system not Android according to three sources speaking to USA Today. The sources say that Samsung will announce the new Gear running a HTML5 version of Tizen at an event at Mobile World Congress later this month in Barcelona. HTML5 is an interesting move as it may attract more web developers to build for the smartwatch.
Tizen is a project within the Linux Foundation and is governed by a Technical Steering Group which consists of Samsung and Intel among others. It uses a variety of open source licenses and it aims to offer a consistent user experience across devices.
The fact that the version of Tizen on the new Galaxy Gear may be HTML5 based is a pretty interesting move as it may attract more web developers to build for the smartwatch.
